The Cathedral Oak Tree is a Southern Live Oak. It is a cultivar which means it was cloned from a mother tree with the same DNA so as to copy the dense and upper structure of the tree. This tree is exceptional for applications where a consistent look and a tall dense headed tree is desired in the landscape. It is consistent in height and spread whether planning 1 or 50 in the design. Cathedral Live Oak Trees do not require the breadth of space a typical Standard live oak must have and can be planted as close as 30 feet apart. It is perfect for any place where consistency, privacy and shade are desired in the landscape.

Its well spaced branching is complimented by dense, dark green foliage. Being an evergreen it brightens up the otherwise dismal winter landscapes where deciduous trees grow and shed their leaves after the first frost. The Cathedral Live Oak Tree leaves are of a dark green color with a yellow green underside. It is native to the Southeastern United States which means that after they are established, they do well without special watering requirements. It is adaptable to most any soil type and grows well in partial sun to full sun.

With the low temperatures that we have experienced over the past few winters you may want to consider some plants that are still tropical in nature and looks, but can survive the colder weather. The cold hardy Windmill Palm is a very attractive palm that can make it through with no worries. And now is the time to install them so they can get established during our prime growing season.

Windmill palms usually have a very full, yet compact crown of medium to deep green leaves. The three-foot-wide fan-shaped fronds extend from 1.5-foot-long, rough-edged, petioles. If one didn’t know better, you might think the trunk was wrapped in burlap. Most Windmill Palms grow to an average height of 10 to 20 feet tall. One (1) foot of growth or more per year is typical of these trees. Mature trees make an excellent canopy to be planted near pools, Jacuzzis, around decks and patios, etc…It does well in confined areas and is hardy to 10 degrees F. or lower.

For a more mature tree with a thicker trunk, averaging about 5 feet high we can supply and install a thirty (30) gal.

The Italian Cypress trees give height to your foundation plantings without taking up a lot of room. Architects use them to frame entryways, cover vertical drain-pipes, soften corners and vertical edges and even as elegant property dividers. Planted three feet apart they can make a nice blind for your property. You can even plant them in large pots to frame your front entryway or to add elegance to your back patio or pool.

They grow almost everywhere… require little water, and can adapt to almost any soil type you may have. Unlike most evergreens, the Italian Cypress does not grow in a pyramidal fashion. These popular new trees grow in a narrow, columnar fashion, practically reaching straight up without ever growing very wide. When they reach the height you want, just cut the top.

These fast growers can shoot up to 2-3 ft. a year while giving you dense foliage, soft texture and symmetrical shape.

We have the Italian Cypress available this month in a 30 gal. (10’) size, (pictured). It is also available in a 15 gallon which is equally as nice in appearance

This is a Florida Flame Red Maple (100 gal) that we recently installed for a client in the Windermere area. This tree is an example of the excellent size and quality that you will be getting from us. This is a tree that will make an immediate change to the look of your landscape. This tree was planted in this location specifically to provide shade for the front porch from the late afternoon sun. In a few years it will not only provide shade for the porch area but also most of the front of the house.

The Florida Flame Red Maple is a tree that offers some fall color for warm-winter areas. It is a deciduous tree (loses its leaves in the fall-winter) that produces brilliant red foliage in the fall. This tree can grow to over 40 feet in height, with a dome spread of 30 to 40 feet. It can work great to provide shade for your rooftop, or other areas of your landscape, in the summer heat. By shading your roof you cut down on heat buildup in the attic area of your home, which

makes it easier to cool your home. In other areas of the yard good shade trees can lower temperatures by as much as 25 degrees F, making for a much more enjoyable day of activities in your outdoor environment. In late fall it sheds its leaves and will let enough sun filter through to warm your home during the colder months.

This tree will do well in a bright, sunny location or in a partially shaded one. It is very adaptable to most soil types. It is fast growing and will grow well even in extreme heat. Once established it has average water needs; water regularly but do not over water. This is also a good street tree for the front of your house. The red maple should be planted thirty to forty feet apart. The fall colors will amaze your friends and neighbors and add charm to your landscape in the fall when the leaves change. Call for sizes and pricing.

The European Fan Palm Tree has become very popular in recent years, mostly due to its cold hardiness that makes it perfect for landscaping in USDA zones 7b-11. It’s a nice looking palm tree that can give an exotic focal point to any garden with its evergreen fan-shaped leaves. Since it grows only to about 5 to10ft tall and. 1-5ft wide it is often used in areas where space is limited or in small yards where a tropical effect is desired. It is also known as Mediterranean Fan Palm, Dwarf Fan Palm and Palmetto.

The Fan Palm has multiple trunks and has somewhat of a shrubby look. The trunks are covered in old leaf bases and brown fibers. It is a fairly slow growing plant and can take years to reach its maximum height. It has triangular, palmate, or fan shaped, leaves that range from blue green to silvery gray in color. Leaves grow outward then upward. They grow up to 25 inches long and 25 inches wide, supported by 4ft stems. Stems are covered with sharp thorns, so you need to be careful when pruning them.

During late spring months the European Fan Palm produces small yellow flowers Individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant. Flowers are followed by green fruits that turn brown when ripe. Fruits are around 0.5 inch in diameter, develop in fall and are not edible.

It is wind resistant and is very cold hardy. It will tolerate cold temperatures down to 5F. It grows in full sun to partial shade but does best in full sun. It is easy maintenance and likes moist but well drained soil conditions.

Many landscapes look great in spring, but lose a lot of their interest in fall and winter months. Once identified, this problem is easily corrected by adding a few interesting plants.

There are many elements of landscape design. Color, line, balance, proportion, natural transition and simplicity are all elements to consider in a good landscape design. Movement is another design element that adds interest. This can be accomplished in many ways, such as a circulating pond or a babbling water fall. Movement can also be attained by adding some unique and interesting plants to your landscape.

Purple Muhly Grass is one commonly used ornamental grass that also has many other desirable traits. In late summer through late fall it explodes into bloom with clouds of pinkish/purple blooms. When in bloom this plant is billowing and delicate, almost fluid in movement as it adds a dramatic look to your property at a time when many other plants are starting to decline. If planted in a location with the early morning or late evening sun in the background, they are especially stunning. If you have a boring space on your property this can be an extremely colorful addition and it is very warm to the eye.

Muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris), is a native to Florida and is a fall favorite for many Central Florida landscapes. This native grass forms clumps (is not invasive) of very fine blue-green foliage that provides both color and texture to the garden. Muhly Grass is exceptionally drought tolerant and, once established can usually be watered once a week. It grows to heights of 2-3 feet with a spread of 2-3 feet. It prefers full sun to part shade and does best in average to dry soil where there is very good drainage. This plant does not tolerate winter wetness well.

Best of all this plant requires almost no perpetual maintenance as long as its basic watering needs are met and, it is usually free of pests and disease. You should cut back dormant growth in winter before new growth begins to emerge in early spring.

This is a great plant for xeriscapes. Muhly Grass is rated hardy in USDA Zones 6-11.

Ground covers are an important part of any landscape design where energy efficiency and conservation is a consideration. With proper selection for specific areas, they can be very efficient in cutting down on heat buildup around the exterior of your home and therefore help reduce the amount of heat absorbed into your home. There are some ground covers that do not need a lot of sun and will grow in shady areas of your yard where sod does not do well. Certain ground covers can be used on slopes to help control erosion problems. They can be planted next to a driveway or walkway to provide a barrier or to discourage traffic patterns and will again help absorb heat from concrete or blacktop. And ground covers, if selected properly for the area, will use much less water than most turfs, once established.

One of the most popular ground covers that we install is Asian Jasmine. We usually plant Asian Jasmine in defined areas to establish large, shady beds where grass is hard to grow because of insufficient sunlight. However, this plant tolerates sun just as well.

It is a dense, fast growing ground cover with small oval leaves that are shiny. With its glossy-textured, dark green foliage Asian Jasmine exudes an atmosphere of calm and coolness and is a welcome addition to any landscape design. It prefers moist, well drained, well prepared soil for best establishment. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant and should not be overwatered. It requires very little in the way of maintenance as long as planted in a defined area. In most cases Asian Jasmine will climb only if trained to do so.

As a rule this plant is evergreen in our local climate and will tolerate temperatures in the 20 degree F range. It grows to a height of 6 to 12 inches, spreads to 3 ft. plus and should be planted 18’ to 24’ apart. It is dense enough, once established, to discourage most weed growth, although some hand weeding may be required until established.

Ornamental Peanut is an attractive, low maintenance groundcover. This drought-tolerant, hardy perennial requires no supplemental water after it is established. It is in the peanut family, thus it makes its own nitrogen. This eliminates the need of nitrogen fertilizers. It has no known pests or disease which makes it an excellent ground cover of choice!

This plant grows to a height of 6 inches tall, has a deep green leaf, and is sometimes used as an alternative to sod. It requires a well-drained soil and thrives in full sun. As a side benefit, it has a beautiful yellow flower from early spring through summer and into late fall.

This plant in not a particularly aggressive specimen and in fact, like most lawns, goes dormant in the winter; however it is best to keep it contained. If you are in an area where deer are a problem this is not a plant you would want to install. Its mother plant has the nickname “Florida Alfalfa” and is sometimes grown as feed stock for horses and as an attractant and food supply on deer preserves.

Like all plants, there is an establishment period but once established the Ornamental Peanut has great drought tolerance. It will go dormant in all areas in cold winters but will come back in early spring and does not require replanting once established.
The Sylvester Date Palm is also known as Sugar Date Palm, India Date Palm, and Wild Date Palm. This tree was the Florida Nursery Growers & Landscapers Association 2006 Plant of the Year. With its bright green, slightly curving fronds and bumpy trunk, it is fast becoming the central trophy plant in many landscapes.

The Sylvester Date Palm produces small white flowers supported by 2-3ft long branching fronds.. The Sylvester Date Palm is dioecious, male and female flowers are born on different plants. Flowers are followed by oval fruits, about 1 inch in diameter, turning purple-black when ripe. Fruits are eatable and have a sweet taste. They contain a single seed inside.

It has a moderate growth rate, will grow in full sun or partial shade, and is drought tolerant once established. Its looks literally scream tropical, but it can tolerate temperatures as low as 15° F so it is well suited to our recently colder winters… The date palms have the typical diamond-shaped leaf scars on the trunk of the tree, and produce feather-shaped fronds with nasty sharp spines at the base of their leaves. They can grow to a height of 40 feet.

The Mary Nell is an evergreen of the oak leaf variety and the leaves are a nice shade of dark green year round. When mature, the tree takes on a pyramidal shape and has a dense crown. When flowering in the spring, the blooms are green and white in color. The blooms carry a pleasant fragrance and are inconspicuous to the eye. The Mary Nell has red berries that can create an interest in any landscape; the fruit is fleshy and round.

As well as being a beautiful addition to your landscape, the Mary Nell works well as a border to afford more privacy for your property, block out traffic noise and fumes or as a screen to section off parts of your yard from view. They also work well in blocking the sun from windows or porches while still permitting good air flow. The growth rate is slow; it does well in partial shade to full sun; and adapts to any well drained loamy, sandy, or clay soil types. This is the type of plant that can make an immediate change to the entire look of your landscape.
